Crypto market sentiment has cooled sharply, with the Fear & Greed Index falling 18 points in a single day as Bitcoin retreated toward $81,000. The index dropped from 68, classified as Greed, to 50 on October 23, returning sentiment to the Neutral category after a period of stronger optimism.
According to the Alternative.me Fear & Greed Index, the gauge stood at 63 one week earlier and 71 one month earlier. The latest reading represents a rapid daily reset in sentiment rather than evidence of an established Neutral trend, since the market was still firmly in Greed territory on October 22.
Bitcoin traded around $81,300-$81,600 during October 23 snapshots, depending on the data provider and collection time. The price decline coincided with the sentiment deterioration, but the magnitude of the index move should not be interpreted as a direct percentage measure of Bitcoin’s losses.
Sentiment Retreats Faster Than Bitcoin
Alternative.me constructs the index from Bitcoin volatility, market momentum and volume, social-media activity, Bitcoin dominance and Google Trends data. A move from 68 to 50 therefore reflects changes across several behavioral and market indicators rather than price action alone.
The decline extends a broader cooling process visible throughout October. The index had returned to 70 on October 5 after several days of weaker readings, before later falling to 59 during an October 9 leverage unwind. The progression shows sentiment gradually losing the elevated levels reached during late September even before the latest 18-point daily drop.
The September peak provides additional context. The index reached 78 on September 22 before retreating to 71 the following day. That 78-to-50 decline spans roughly one month and should not be compared directly with a one-day Bitcoin price move, because the two measurements cover different periods.
Alternative.me also treats the index as a sentiment indicator rather than a forecasting model. A Neutral reading means its composite inputs no longer indicate either pronounced fear or greed, but it does not establish that buyers and sellers are literally balanced or that Bitcoin has entered a new trend.
Broader Crypto Market Loses Value
The sentiment reset occurred alongside a wider market decline. CoinGecko placed total cryptocurrency market capitalization near $2.82 trillion on October 23, down roughly 3% over 24 hours, while total trading volume stood around $80.5 billion. The selloff therefore extended beyond Bitcoin into the broader crypto market rather than remaining confined to one asset.
Ethereum traded near $2,400 during the same period, while CoinGecko’s DeFi category held approximately $76.1 billion in market capitalization. DeFi tokens were down more than 5% as a category in the latest snapshot, showing a steeper decline than the aggregate market.
Bitcoin’s recent price action has also occurred against uneven institutional flows. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $526.7 million of net inflows on October 19, reversing previous withdrawals. ETF creations, spot prices and sentiment indicators can move differently over short periods, so none should be treated as a standalone measure of market conviction.
The October 23 reading therefore marks a sharp reduction in optimism without yet signaling outright fear. The clearest development is an 18-point daily sentiment reset from Greed to Neutral while Bitcoin and the broader crypto market simultaneously moved lower, leaving subsequent readings to determine whether the shift persists or proves temporary.
