But if another major crypto opportunity is about to arise, it’s likely to have little in common with the coins that dominate this day’s headlines. Bitcoin and big Altcoins grab the headlines while smaller companies are developing technology that could be relied upon by financial institutions in the future.
These companies are not concerned with day to day price movements, but with payments, digital investment and transaction settlement. Some could end up serving a much bigger market, as the U.S. and Europe establish clearer regulations.
The Next Crypto Winners May Already Be Taking Shape
Most crypto discussions focus on finding coins that could deliver major gains. However, some important developments are happening outside the usual trading conversations. Smaller companies are building systems that help banks and investment firms move money and manage digital assets.
Their work rarely attracts much excitement, but it addresses services the financial industry already needs. Some specialize in payments, while others develop systems for issuing digital securities or protecting customer assets. These businesses could become important as more financial services move onto blockchain networks.
These companies have needs that are more practical rather than the projects that are in competition with Bitcoin or Ethereum. Their success is reliant on financial institution success in adopting their products and continued use of the products. When the market is on the up, reliable technology and established customers may be more important than attention.
By the time the wider market notices, early developers may already have valuable customer relationships. However, business growth does not necessarily mean an associated cryptocurrency will increase in value.
U.S. and European Regulations Are Opening the Door
Companies are gaining insights into the regulations for providing blockchain services, thanks to regulatory changes. In Europe some cryptocurrency service providers and stablecoin issuers are regulated by the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). This helps companies to get a clearer picture of doing business in the European Union.
There are also regulations being introduced for the application of blockchain in securities markets in Europe. DLT Pilot Regime is a regime that enables qualified companies to run trading and settlement systems based on blockchain technology. The agreements may enable institutions to consider new approaches to financial transactions.
In the meantime, the U.S. has presented its GENIUS Act, a federal plan for payment stablecoins in July 2025. The Securities and Exchange Commission and other securities regulators are also studying the incorporation of tokens into the current law. The rules are still difficult to adhere to, but they could become more clear, which might help more institutions get into the blockchain services arena.
Franklin Templeton and Animoca Brands Expand Tokenized Investments
A recent agreement between Franklin Templeton and Animoca Brands shows how this market is developing. On October 9, 2026, the companies announced plans to expand institutional access to tokenized real-world assets. The partnership involves NUVA, an investment marketplace backed by Animoca Brands.
NUVA launched in May 2026 through a collaboration with Nuva Labs. It initially offered tokenized assets through Provenance Blockchain. The companies reported that the network held more than $30 billion in total value locked as of September 24.

Franklin Templeton managed $1.83 trillion in assets as of August 31. Through the partnership, the asset manager could reach more institutional investors using blockchain-based investment products. NUVA also plans to introduce assets from additional issuers.
Could the Biggest Crypto Opportunity Still Be Overlooked?
These lesser-known aspects of crypto could be worth trading on now. The financial markets cannot do without payments, assets’ custody or settlement services. The blockchain revolution may create a new market for such providers as they become more in demand.
Consider an investment firm planning to issue shares or funds on a blockchain. It requires technology to develop assets, safeguard customer assets, and finalize transactions. Those businesses that are providing these services may be able to attract customers as more institutions look into tokenized investments.
But, for partnerships to be successful and promising technologies to be commercialised, it is not enough to simply have them in place at an early stage. Certain businesses may find it hard to attract customers, and others might grow but have the negative impact of not benefiting the token holders.
