Rakuten is drawing fresh attention to XRP as part of its broader payments ecosystem in Japan, with RippleX highlighting a route that lets users move from loyalty points into the digital asset and ultimately into spendable Rakuten Cash. The setup connects XRP with everyday retail spending, but does not mean merchants are directly accepting XRP at checkout.
The potential audience is substantial. Rakuten Group says it has more than 100 million members in Japan, although access to the crypto functionality requires the relevant Rakuten Wallet services rather than automatically extending to every registered member. Rakuten Wallet officially supports XRP and allows eligible Rakuten Points to be exchanged for cryptocurrencies handled by its spot service.
@Rakuten reaches more than 100 million users in Japan. Customers are able to use Rakuten Points to buy XRP, convert XRP to Rakuten Cash and spend it through @RakutenPay_App.

XRP Connects Rakuten Points With Spendable Cash
The process begins inside Rakuten Wallet, where customers can use eligible Rakuten Points to acquire XRP. Rakuten Wallet’s official XRP guidance confirms that users can exchange points for XRP and other supported crypto assets. This gives loyalty rewards a direct route into cryptocurrency without requiring users to fund the initial purchase exclusively with cash.
From there, XRP held in Rakuten Wallet can be converted into Rakuten Cash. Rakuten’s official cash service explicitly lists cryptocurrency held through Rakuten Wallet as a supported source for charging the electronic-money balance. Once converted, Rakuten Cash can be spent through Rakuten Pay and other participating Rakuten services, effectively turning crypto value back into a conventional payment balance.
That distinction makes the structure more precise than describing it as direct XRP merchant payments. The XRP is converted before the retail transaction takes place, while Rakuten Cash serves as the spending instrument at the payment stage. RippleX’s own description follows the same sequence: Rakuten Points can buy XRP, XRP can be converted to Rakuten Cash, and that balance can then be spent through Rakuten Pay.
Retail Utility Grows Without Direct Crypto Acceptance
For XRP, the significance lies in providing another consumer-facing conversion path rather than replacing Japan’s existing payment infrastructure. Rakuten has effectively placed XRP between its loyalty and payments products, creating a bridge from accumulated points to crypto exposure and back into retail purchasing power.
The model also reduces the burden on merchants because they do not need to hold or directly process XRP for customers to use value originating from the asset. That makes the integration primarily a Rakuten Wallet and Rakuten Cash functionality rather than an XRP Ledger settlement system deployed across Rakuten Pay merchants.
Rakuten’s scale gives the feature considerable distribution potential, but registered membership should not be confused with active XRP usage. The more meaningful adoption signal will be how many Rakuten Wallet customers actually use the points-to-XRP-to-cash route for recurring purchases, rather than the size of Rakuten’s overall membership base alone.
